This past weekend, “The Dark Knight” earned a record breaking $158.3 million outing previous record holder “Spider-Man 3″ which earned $151.1 million in May of 2007. The success of “The Dark Knight” also helped make this past weekend the biggest three-day weekend ever in terms of total grosses with $250 million breaking the $218.4 million record set July 2007 when “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” debuted. It was aided on the latter by “Mama Mia” which broke the record for top grossing musical and earned a respectable $26.8 million. “Space Chimps” was less successful, earning only $7.3 million in its debut.
