This Friday “Journey to the Center of the Earth” will be released as the largest digital 3-D release to date. Similar to last years “Beowulf” it was conceived as a 3-D film and based on that films performance, New Line knows that it will play better on theaters that feature the 3-D effects. To that end RealD, the leading 3-D vendor, has been struggling to get that technology available in as many theaters ready before the films release. They particularly struggling internationally. Part of the problem is that you can’t have 3-D without digital projection and the rollout in Europe for digital projection has been incredibly slow according to the Hollywood Reporter. While the U.S. has almost 5,000 digital screens (950 of which have 3-D capabilities) , Europe has only around 1,000 (with only around 120 3-D). All of this is bad news for Hollywood which has a dozen 3-D films scheduled for release in 2009.
