Reuters reports that “The Inredible Hulk” topped the U.S. box office this weekend with $54.5 million take. It didn’t quite crush the previous “Hulk” film directed by Ang Lee which had a $62 million debut back in ’03. Although “Hulk” had a big opening weekend, it couldn’t keep the ticket sales going, and left theaters making $137 million domestically.
The weekend’s other new entry, M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Happening,” landed in the No. 3 spot with a weekend take of $30.5 million and a per theater average of $10,200 from just under 3000 theaters. It was released by 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp..
This is a good sign for Shyamalan, since his last film “Lady in the Water” was so poorly received by audiences and critics. Kung Fu Panda awesomely stayed near the top and hung onto second place with $34.3 mill.
